To keep or not to keep

English Lifestyle

If you’re moving this summer, whether you’re upsizing to a new house, or even downsizing to a condo, one of the hardest parts of a move is figuring out what you should be bringing with you and what to buy new. So, where to start?

Organize: Walk through your current home and start to make 3 piles. 1 - Garbage, 2- absolutely love this and can’t part with it, and 3- I like it and will take it with me if it fits.

This applies to everything from furniture to artwork to books and accessories. Be honest with yourself! If you haven’t used it in over a year, get rid of it! (*there are lots of local charities that would be happy to take it)

Measure: Make sure that you have accurate dimensions of your new rooms as well as your current furniture. You want to make sure that the pieces you had hoped to keep will actually fit. When you’re considering your furniture, try to look at each piece with new eyes. The huge buffet that sat in your grand dining room may need to be used as a bedroom dresser in your new condo. And that’s ok! Using it with a different function gives it a whole new life!

Once you’ve decided what’s coming and what’s going, it’s time to shop! A new home is a new start, so it is nice to buy new things to freshen up your look.

A good place to start is in the rooms that are used the most.  The kitchen is the center of my house, and I love the idea of a fresh new table. Artremano’s Anand Square dining table made of rosewood is one of my favourites. The natural grain of the rosewood mixes beautifully with all architectural and décor styles. If you have the space for a square table, it is extremely conducive to mealtime conversation.

The den/family room is the second most used room in my home and the couch is the piece that anchors it. I always recommend investing in a good couch. You want one that’s comfortable to sit in, has ample seating, and looks fabulous. Artemano’s Royal Sofa is the perfect example of a couch that can hold its own! The mix of traditional lines with current accents like the nail head trim makes it a stunning showpiece.  What makes it really perfect is that you can comfortably curl up in it and relax.

The master bedroom is one of my favourite rooms to decorate. I love the idea of creating a soothing, calming room using pillows, textures and tone on tone fabrics.  Couple these with beautiful headboards, strong and impressive storage units and a soft rug, and you have the perfect room.  Invest in a very good mattress.  You will thank yourself every night when you lie down! If you have the space, try to incorporate a small chair or bench. A bedroom doesn’t have to be only for sleeping.  Create a small reading nook, or a comfy corner near the window to enjoy your morning tea.

The #1 most important thing to remember, regardless of whether or not you’re upsizing or downsizing, is that you should never have anything in your home that you don’t absolutely love. If a piece speaks to you and it has meaning to you, you will make it work!
