Shifting Into Spring

About English

Spring is almost here and with it comes some of my favourite things; having coffee on a terrace, and fresh, bright home décor! When I was growing up, spring was the season of change. We did a lot of cleaning (purge, purge, purge) and our décor got lighter as well. Each room seemed to have a small change that made it feel fresh and new.

The number one trick to transition your house from winter to spring is by cleaning and organizing. Empty out your cupboards and closets and get rid of the excess that you accumulated over the last few months.  Try looking at your room with fresh eyes and evaluate what can be moved, where can new things be added, and what will make it look brighter.

One of the most versatile pieces of furniture that you can have in any room is a sideboard. It provides closed storage, display space and can be used as a serving platform when entertaining.

Go bold with your sideboard – buy a piece that’s colourful and has some character like reclaimed wood or distressed metals.  These become a piece of art on their own.

The beauty of the open display is that you can change your accessories according to the season, holiday or your mood. Spring is the perfect time to take out your brightly coloured vases and bowls. These don’t have to be fancy blown glass - casual, pastel coloured ceramics are beautiful and spring appropriate.

A very easy change that has big impact is in your bedding. In the cold wintery months, I switch into hibernation mode and tend to accessorize my bed with darker, richer colors & textures like faux fur. In the warmer months, I love simple, crisp white bedding. It’s so fresh and clean looking which is exactly the feel that you want to create. When it comes to bedroom throw pillows, more is definitely more! Layering different white on white patterns and textures keeps your bed looking interesting and styled. Your bed is the last thing you see at night and the first you see in the morning, so don’t be afraid to make it pop.

Along that same train of thought are the throw pillows on your sofa. These can also be switched multiple times per year.  I love bright silks or embroidery in teals and fuchsias. Pair these with solid whites or creams and you have a beautiful spring palette.

Spring isn’t all about bright colors. There’s something about the grain, colouring and durability of wood in its natural form that accentuates all decorative styles all year round.  Freeform wood is my favourite example of this. Each piece looks unique, and makes such a statement. From the smallest accessory to a stunning bench, these pieces add freshness to your room.

Can you think of anything that says ‘spring’ more than fresh flowers? Place a bouquet of freshly cut bulbs on top of a wood cabinet (used to store all of your winter accessories that you just switched out) and you have a perfect spring combo!
